Stay down!
Aren't you listening?
Pineapple.
Stop shooting three pointers!
Why would you do that?
Defense!
Go falcons!
Pineapple.
Shoot the ball!
Did you see that?
Way to go!
Hands up!
Pineapple.
Are you serious?
Why the whistle?
Let's go!
That's crazy!
Shoooot!
Pineapple.
What are you waiting for?
Run!
Yes!!!!!
I can't watch anymore....
Settle down.
One more.
Pineapple.
Sometimes you win , sometimes you lose.
There is always next year.
One little boy picked the word Pineapple that he kept yelling every time the opposing team was trying to shoot a basket. Always, except once, when he yelled Pineapple, the opposing team did NOT make a basket!
Pineapple is a whole lot better than some of the language I've head at games over the years! I also love to watch the PEOPLE around me...mom's and dad's scrunching as if THEY were shooting the baskets..the sighs as if they had just lost their lunch...thanks for the delightful SOL
ReplyDeleteParents are interesting. I had one very nervous mother behind me!
DeleteWe have a game tonight and I'm going to watch/listen with a whole new perspective. Love the pineapple refrain!
ReplyDeleteYou had me curious about that pineapple. Hmmm, wonder if it only works when it comes from the mouth of a little boy. People are funny, you just have to stop, watch, and listen.
ReplyDeletePineapple???? Kids are so funny...and I like the way the word popped out your poem and called attention to itself. So much fun!
ReplyDeleteThat was fun! Loved "pineapple"! When I first read the poem I thought perhaps it would be your substitution for some crude word that was repeating itself...how cynical is that? Loved that it was just a word probably just made up that his parents said would be acceptable to say! It's not negative!
ReplyDeleteI really did not hear any bad language. Could it be because the game was played at a Christian school?!?
DeleteCute slice. It's been a while since I've been to a high school basketball game, but I do remember the many comments being said. If the word "pineapple" worked, I say go for it.
ReplyDeleteSuch clean language for a game. Love the pineapple. I thought you used it as a comic relief until I read the explanation.
ReplyDeleteHilarious!! Whenever I have the "grown up language" conversation with students, I offer the Sponge-Bob Square pants-inspired, "Barnacles!" as an alternative. Actually, "Pineapple" could be similarly sourced from Sponge-Bob Square Pants. haha Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteMaybe I should watch Sponge-Bob; I might learn new vocabulary!
DeleteI was wondering why "pineapple" kept appearing! That's so cute! I liked how you showed us what it was like to be at the game with just the little snippets of language -- a fun idea!
ReplyDeleteMy husband is a high school varsity basketball coach. There are so many comments to overhear from the stands. I am always amazed at how many "coaches" there are in the stands. This was great! Our basketball season is over, but you inspired me to take a notebook with me to games next year just to record comments from the stands! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteYour idea is great: take a notebook with me. That way I could capture even more words! I have to remember that!
DeleteComments from the stands and comments overheard from the hall (an earlier slice this week). It's time for me to listen for my next slice.
