What Do Your E-mails Tell about You?

How many e-mails did you get yesterday?

I have to admit I did not count mine. There were the usual ones at school:

  • 20% off just for today
  • download this or that (I erased it without really reading)
  • L's powerpoint
  • daily absence report (quick look to see how many my students would be absent--none)
  • From M. (no message just a link--discussion followed on how you have to write what you are asking me to do for you. I can't read minds, at least not yet.)
  • blog post needs your approval (all approved)
  • great news story--must read for your students (sorry, no time today)
  • Can u print this?
  • Don't forget our lunch meeting
  • Just FYI, K is absent today, You need a sub for testing (Seriously??)

At home, e-mails are usually a bit more interesting:
  • You have new comments on your blog. (Yeah!!! This brightens my day!)
  • These coupons expire tomorrow--use them today!
  • Your new statement is available (hopefully with good news)
  • Check your rewards and book now to save money!
  • These airfares won't be around for long! Book your trip today!
  • Follow x, y, and z on twitter
  • Daily Lenten practices
  • Coffee Saturday?
  • Your Fitbit battery level is low (all charged and ready to record  my steps again)
  • Your order has shipped (Yeah!!!)
  • X retweeted a Tweet you were mentioned in (Can I click, "like this"?)
  • New boards are waiting for you!
  • YWAM-eTouch March 2015 (This I need to save and read again.)
  • You have a new follower (Sweet!)
What story do your e-mails tell?

  1. I love this list. A slice of our life as seen in our inbox.

  2. Great list!! I may "steal" this idea!!
I wonder what my emails do tell about me.
I agree that blog comment notices are the best!!

  4. I never gave my emails much thought before reading this. Now I will have to. I admit that my favorite emails come around my birthday when I get coupons for free meals from restaurants where I have registered.

  5. Way to show your writerly skills, Jaana, by noticing and sharing. I have not thought about how much our emails tell about us until I read this!

  6. What a great way to "read" a person. Our emails do tell a story. I'm afraid my email is too filled up to decipher. Hmm... what does that say about me??

  8. Good question: "What do your emails say about you?" I have three email accounts: school, university (I'm an adjunct in the early college program), and personal. School email consists mostly of announcements, as does the university email; my personal email is another story. It says, I subscribe to too many sites that I can't get to quit sending updates (read: spam) even w/ the help of Unroll Me; it says we have a speech due in comm next week when students begin emailing outlines for early feedback; it says I no longer use snail mail for various banking needs; it says I don't moderate blog comments but do subscribe to blogs I want to visit again; it says I like news and current events. I'm sure there is more, but I feel as though I'm "blogmenting" too much already!

  10. Honestly some days I just press delete without even reading them. They seem to be growing in numbers!

  13. Jaana,
This is so interesting. Our emails do tell a story. I get way too many. I hate to delete the ones I want to refer back to but then my school email account runs out of space. I loved your commentaries on each one. Great post!

  14. This is such a fun way to peek at your life! My favorite part was your little comments in parentheses after some of the items -- a great way to hear your voice -- but it was also just fun to see all the different kinds of emails you get. You're right -- email really does a pretty good job at telling the story of who we are!

  15. This is a great idea, Jaana! My emails are much the same as yours, but the number of them definitely reflects my inability to throw anything away!
